Awesome book. This simply amazed me and entertained all the way. Well done. Well written. I just couldn't put it down. And I learned things, especially about the Curies and so many others. This book makes me think scientific research will actually change our lives in the future (if we have the same sort of eccentric commitment from our scientists).Looks new.The cover of this book looks like it's going to be silly. It isn't. It IS shocking, hilarious, thrilling, horrifying, astounding. I love this book, even though I often exclaimed "Oh my, God!" while reading it. Some pages, I sat with my hand over my mouth in shock. Some, laughing out loud like a lunatic.I rarely read non-fiction, but I cannot recommend this book enough.Norton has compiled a fascinating collection of stories outlining how many scientists have performed dangerous experiments on themselves. From inhaling poisonous gases to performing surgery on yourself, to purposeful bleeding, this book has it all. Well written and highly entertaining, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in science, experimentation or the odd and eccentric. Not being even remotely scientific-minded, I have no idea how many--if any--errors and scientific inaccuracies are in this book. And I don’t care. This is a history of the brave, crazy, dedicated, and decidedly off-kilter people who hold to the adage “never ask anyone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself.” One of the best books I’ve read this year. The humor author expressed and the tragedies behind them are imprssive. Really grateful to peope risk themselves.Glad to know about this part of development. In this case, both title and subtitle provide potential readers with an accurate estimation of the book's style. Although Norton is an emeritus professor of marine biology at the University of Liverpool, the book is clearly a romp, written with perhaps less inhibition than was necessary given the subject matter. One expects stories of scientists doing awful things to their own and others' bodies in the name of science, but there are also bright excursions into grave robbing, radium poisoning, biological weaponry, electric shock treatments, and the surprises that have dispersed bomb disposal units. This book covered a variety of scientific areas with humor and interest. The title makes it sound like it is going to be making fun of a bunch of goofy guys with more brains than sense...but it celebrates the scientists who risk everything to understand the world better. I thought it was a great book that appears well researched and well written. This is a wonderful book which explains in an easy to understand way what various individuals have been prepared to put themselves through for the betterment of mankind. As you get to the end of a chapter it is very hard not to continue to the next despite the time if it's getting late! For anyone interested in this subject it is the perfect book. It is well researched and well written and maintains the interest of the reader throughout.I got to know the existence of this book (Smoking Ears and Screaming Teeth authored by Trevor Norton) in a book review on a Japanese newspaper's book review column as a book translated into Japanese language and then I decided to purchase this book in original English version. The contents are really very intriguing writing about hitory of medical experiments undertaken by pioneers risking sometimes the health of him/her-self or of close family members. In the early part of the book, remark was made rightly on Dr. Seishu HANAOKA as a Japanese pioneer on anesthetics. This citation was somewhat surprising to me and was quite impressed by the author's profound knowledge in the matter he reviewed in his book with horizen extended exceeding Europe.I wish this book is read by wider spectrum of readers besides young medical students starting their career as the reference book of their morale standard.Nobumitsu SHOHOJIEasy to read, with enough detail to keep my medical side happy, but not so much to deter a non-medic.A wonderful homage to those brave, some might say foolhardy, early researchers who tried new procedures and treatments on themselves rather than gullible patients. Fascinating reading.Excellent service from the sellerA fascinating account of all the oddball experiments over the ages - thank goodness there was no 'Health and Safety' legislation around, otherwise we would all be the poorer! A superb book - I can't recommend it highly enough.
